Construction contracting

Contractors

State contractor board and/or the city or county where the work is performed.

Who needs this license

A business that performs construction work for others often needs a state contractor license, a trade license, or a local contractor registration — sometimes all three. Several states have no statewide contractor license and leave the work to cities and counties.

Typical filing path

File with the state contractor board or professional-licensing division where a statewide license exists. Separately check the city or county where the job sits. Public jobs add bid, performance, and payment bonds that are not the same thing as a license bond.

Federal layer

Federal Davis-Bacon and contract rules can apply on federal projects. They do not replace a required state or local contractor license.

How to find the state desk

Start at the state index and open the financial regulator listed there, then follow that agency’s insurance, contractor, or charities links. We do not generate 50 thin pages for adjacent filings.

Agency names and filing paths are public facts from state regulator sites, the NMLS / CSBS agency directory, and published statutes. License categories and exemptions change. Confirm the current checklist on the official site before you apply. This is not legal advice and not a fee schedule.
